Castle Memorial Award
Each year, the West Point Society of the
District of Columbia presents the prestigious Castle Memorial
Award to the USMA graduate who has distinguished himself or
herself in exemplifying the ideals of West Point in either a
military or civilian capacity. The award was established by Ben
Castle, Class of 1907, and first President of the D.C. Society,
in memory of his son, Fred Castle, Class of 1930, who was killed
in an air mission during the Battle of the Bulge on Christmas
Eve, 1944. As a Brigadier General commanding the 4th Bomb Wing,
Fred Castle "took control and deliberately gave his own life to
save his crew," and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
The primary objective of this award is to
recognize graduates with outstanding qualities and character who
have served our country well, and who have also achieved success
in a second career outside the military in fields such as
education, ministry, medicine, science, and public service.
The Castle Memorial Award is presented
each year at Founders Day. A request for nominations is made in
the previous Fall Newsletter so that the Castle Memorial Award
Committee can review nominations and make their selection in
mid-January. Individuals and classes are encouraged to initiate
the nomination process in sufficient time to be able to submit a
nomination by the stated deadline, usually early January. The
nomination should contain sufficient supporting information to
permit the Committee to evaluate how the nominee exemplifies the
ideals of West Point. The recipient must be a USMA graduate, and
must agree to be present to receive the award. Residence in the
area, or membership in the Society is not a criteria.

Maxwell D. Taylor
Leadership
Sponsored by the West Point Society
of D.C. and the National Capital Region, the Maxwell D. Taylor
Leadership Award is presented annually to the Cadet Candidate at
the USMA Preparatory School, located at Fort Monmouth, NJ. The
Award was established in recognition of General Taylor's
outstanding leadership throughout his illustrious military
service.
The award also honors General
Taylor for establishing the USMA Preparatory School at Newburgh,
NY on June 25, 1946. During the years since, the school has
provided highly qualified candidates for admission to the United
States Military Academy.
The Maxwell D. Taylor Leadership
Award is presented to the graduate Cadet Candidate selected by a
special board for being tops in overall excellence. The board
consists of the Commandant, Assistant Commandant, Director of
Military Training, Dean and Athletic Director. The most heavily
weighted factors they consider in evaluating nominees from the
Cadet Battalion are: leadership, academic performance, and
physical fitness.
The award is presented at the
graduation ceremony each year. The West Point Society of D.C. and
the National Capital Region is pleased to sponsor this award in
honor of one of its former members, General Taylor '22, who
distinguished himself brilliantly in service to our nation as a
soldier-statesman for more then 50 years.
