The West Point Society of the District of Columbia and the National Capital Region presents the Castle Memorial Award to the West Point graduate who has distinguished himself in exemplifying the ideals of West Point in both a military or civilian capacity. The primary objective of this award is to recognize a graduate whose outstanding qualities of character, distinguished service and stature draw wholesome comparison with the qualities that West Point strives for in keeping with its motto "Duty, Honor, Country," who has served our country well, and who has also achieved success in a second career outside the military in such fields as education, the ministry, medicine, science, or public service.

USMA Class of 1948
The 1998 Frederick W. Castle Memorial Award is presented to Lieutenant General Willard W. Scott, Jr. U.S. Army (Retired) for his outstanding service to the Nation, to the U.S. Army, and to West Point. Lieutenant General Scott has exemplified "Duty, Honor, Country" throughout his active duty and during his retirement.
Graduating from West Point in 1948 and commissioned in the Artillery, he received, throughout his military career, the Distinguished Service Medal, two Legions of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals, the Air Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and two Commendation Medals. From Battery Commander, 5th FA Battalion, 1st Division in Europe, 1949-52, to Commanding General, MACV Special Troops, 1970-72, to Commanding General, 25th Division, 1976-78, then Commanding General, V Corps in Germany, 1980-81, General Scott’s brilliant leadership stood out prominently and suited him well for his selection as Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy in 1981. His five-year tenure in that important position was marked by significant achievements and singular recognition. This assignment climaxed a distinguished military career filled with illustrious leadership milestones.
Culminating his military service as the 52nd Superintendent of USMA, General Scott has continued to serve West Point in many ways. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees, Association of Graduates, served as President of the West Point Society of D.C., and provided exceptional leadership for the USMA Admissions Program. While Society President, General Scott revitalized this program, stressing its importance and dynamic implementation. He has been instrumental in motivating local graduates to assist in Admissions work and has personally met and spoken to prospective candidates at Society events, as well as in local high schools. His involvement has inspired many young men and women to seek admission to West Point.
Throughout his retirement, General Scott has actively pursued the same lofty objectives on behalf of the Military Academy as were evident during his Superintendency. His love for West Point and his unstinting devotion to its ideals are true hallmarks of his leadership.
In recognition of his service in both peace and war, on active duty and in retirement, which so well symbolized the ideals of West Point, it is most fitting that the West Point Society of D.C. and the National Capital Region honor Lieutenant General Willard W. Scott, Jr. Class of 1948, with the Castle Memorial Award for 1998.
