The West Point Society of the District of Columbia and the National Capital Region presents the Castle Memorial Award to the West Point graduate who has distinguished himself in exemplifying the ideals of West Point in both a military or civilian capacity. The primary objective of this award is to recognize a graduate whose outstanding qualities of character, distinguished service and stature draw wholesome comparison with the qualities that West Point strives for in keeping with its motto "Duty, Honor, Country," who has served our country well, and who has also achieved success in a second career outside the military in such fields as education, the ministry, medicine, science, or public service.
The 1999 Castle Memorial Award is presented to Lieutenant General Frank A. Camm, U.S. Army (Ret), for his outstanding service to the Nation, to the U.S. Army, and to West Point. Lieutenant General Camm has exemplified "Duty, Honor, Country" throughout his active duty and his subsequent career and retirement.
General Camm's distinguished record of service was characterized throughout the years by a unique combination of exceptional command and leadership ability with the highest order of technical competence. This was demonstrated in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam where he was awarded four Bronze Star medals and a Legion of Merit, and following World War II, when he led the first military atomic bomb assembly team, and later, as a senior officer, served as Director of Military Applications of the Atomic Energy Commission, Army Assistant Director of Operations, and Deputy Director of the Army Training and Doctrine Command.
Following his retirement from the U.S. Army in 1977, General Camm continued to focus his unique abilities in service to the nation as Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and in a Presidential appointment as Associate Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
General Camm's devotion to West Point is demonstrated by his many contributions over the years, including serving as President of the West Point Society of DC, nine years as Trustee of the Association of Graduates, and by his leadership in the construction of Herbert Hall, the new alumni center at West Point. Noteworthy also is his remarkable record of achievement in volunteer service as founding president and chief operating officer for ten years of The Fairfax, the Army Retirement Residence Foundation, Potomac that arranged the development of the military retirement community at Fort Belvoir.
In recognition of his long and distinguished service and his many accomplishments after retirement from the Army, while displaying outstanding qualities of character, distinguished service, and stature which clearly symbolize the highest ideals of West Point, The West Point Society of D.C. is pleased to honor Lieutenant General Frank A. Camm, USA (Ret), USMA Class of January 1943, with the Castle Memorial Award for 1999.
