  Admissions

The West Point Society of D.C. and the National Capital Region provides extensive support to USMA admissions efforts. Our Society supports an area that stretches from Howard County, Maryland, in the north, to Fredericksburg, Virginia, in the south, and from Winchester, Virginia, in the west to Calvert County, Maryland, in the east. Each year our area provides West Point two to three times more candidates than its fair demographic share. Our area is also one of USMA s most significant sources of outstanding minority candidates.

Approximately 70 local graduates assist with our Society s admissions support efforts. These efforts include (1) representing West Point at college fairs, youth events, and congressional academy days; (2) assisting with the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA); (3) contacting and interviewing candidates and providing candidate service; (4) hosting candidate events and receptions; (5) visiting high schools; (6) hosting educator events; and (7) serving on congressional nominating committees, to name just some. Most of our local admissions participants are volunteers. Their efforts are coordinated by a handful of local Military Academy Liaison Officers (MALOs), who are Reserve officers who work for the USMA Admissions Office but reside in the National Capital area.

Our Society keeps its admissions support efforts closely coordinated with the USMA Admissions Office, our local MALOs, the local West Point Parents Club, and other organizations supportive of West Point. The Chair of our Society s Admissions Committee is the area s senior MALO and sits on the Society s Board. Area MALOs typically communicate with the West Point Admissions Office several times a week, primarily with the Mid-Atlantic Admissions Officer. Thus, our Society is assured of receiving the most current information on USMA admissions.

Our Society provides about $5,000 each year for local admissions support activities. Some of this money funds the area s premiere West Point candidate event, a December brunch at the Fort Belvoir Officers Club for some of the area s top candidates. The brunch typically features a USMA general officer as the guest speaker. Society money also purchases West Point banners used at college fairs and supplements USMA funds for other candidate receptions, educator events, educator visits, and admissions participant training sessions.

Our Society also has a Minority Outreach Subcommittee, which has hosted an area minority candidate outreach reception annually since 1995. This reception not only provides an excellent means to encourage outstanding local minority candidates to attend USMA, but also has turned into a forum where local minority graduates have been able to network and renew old friendships.
